Agriculture/Livestock
Haiti has a rich history of having some of the most fertile land around. For centuries the land was used for growing massive crops to supply Europe until civil unrest made the agricultural industry unprofitable for Europeans. However, the soil has not changed. But to grow enough crops to supply the local area an irrigation system needs to be built so crops will continue to grow during the dry season.
Open Door is working to produce enough fruits and vegetables to meet the needs of the local people., its school & feeding center, and its orphanage. These agriculture projects not only provide jobs for the farmers who are working to cultivate the crops, but also generate some additional income to help sustain the ministry.

Our newest venture in sustainable agriculture is our Poultry Project. We currently have two broiler houses, each able to produce as many as 500 chickens to be sold in the market every 6 weeks, and a layer cage house that will produce up to 100 eggs a day. Our goal with this project is to have at least six of these broiler houses so that our buyers in Haiti can purchase birds from us every week.
Open Door also owns several cows and goats, which are a source of milk and meat to sell at market and supply our school and orphanage. As our livestock have offspring, these are either sold to generate income for the ministry or kept in the the project to expand our production. We are currently looking for more land to house this project and its future growth.
Securing a range for these cattle will allow Open Door to manage the animals properly. Only then can Open Door utilize the resources of raising livestock. And by doing so, Open Door will also be able to provide more jobs for local Haitians.
