Bois de Lance

Bois de Lance is a small, rural farming village situated 15 miles outside of Cap Haitien, nestled amidst Haiti's beautiful mountains.  The village of 20,000 was steeped in voodoo and witchcraft when Pastor Wiljean Compere arrived.

After the pastor of the local baptist church had died, the church building sat empty for 7 years, being taken over by the local market and the voodoo priests.  When Wiljean inquired about the former church, he was given permission by the family to use the building to begin a new evangelical work in the village, and Open Door was born.  That was 1993.

Cap Haitien

Cap Haitien is a city rich with history and culture.  The former capital of the country, Cap Haitien is Haiti's second largest city, with a population estimated near 250,000.

While God called Pastor Wiljean Compere to plant Open Door Church in the rural village of Bois de Lance, after marrying, Wiljean and his wife settled in Cap Haitien, living first in a home given to them by a friend, and then moving into his in-laws home after they migrated to the US.

Hinche

Hinche, located in Haiti's central plateau about 60 miles northeast of Port Au Prince, is a land rich and fertile for farming.  Pastor Wiljean Compere grew up in a small farming village 20 miles outside of Hinche, Haiti's fifth largest city with a population of over 100,000.

Though God had called Wiljean to leave his home and move to Cap Haitien to attend seminary and eventually start a church, the place and the people of his birth were never far from his heart.

Pastor Wiljean discusses how God called him for the first time to attend seminary school

Watch this video and learn about the vision of this project.

Pastor Wiljean talks about coming to Bois de Lance for the first time and encountering the well established witchdoctors in the area.

Witchcraft is a very strong influence on Haiti. A large percentage of the Haitian population is involved in witchcraft and ancestor worship one way or the other. Witch doctors are "normal" and generally accepted by the Haitian people. Pastor Wiljean experienced and encountered the power of witchcraft first hand when he decided to respond to the call of God on his life. Thankfully through the power of Jesus Christ every power of darkness will be subdued.
